About the Event

Speaking is a key component of lawyering, negotiating and managing our daily lives. Decades of social research and good common sense indicate that how we express ourselves is at least as important as the words we use. What should lawyers know about tone and pitch, assertiveness and gendered markers in speech?

How We Speak: Projecting Power & Confidence in Speech seeks to help address these questions in the context of a 30 minute ethics CLE presentation followed by a networking reception. Dr. Catherine Ojakangas—a neuroscientist, speech-language pathologist and accent coach—will explore how non-verbal cues affect our message. She will also analyze how speech is produced, communication styles and their impact on our speech, communication patterns among lawyers and the difference between men’s and women’s speech patterns. JAMS Chicago panelists Eileen Brewer, Geraldine Soat Brown, Laura Frankel and Susan Zwick will help us apply those lessons to an advocate’s work.
