JAMS to Open International Arbitration Centers in Los Angeles and New York

JAMS opens new arbitration centers, which will include amenities, equipment, and space for attorneys and clients

Resolution Center News General Announcements

LOS ANGELES and NEW YORKJAMS, the largest private provider of mediation and arbitration services worldwide, today announced plans to open JAMS International Arbitration Centers (JIACs) in New York and Los Angeles, increasing access to international arbitration facilities for attorneys and their clients in the United States and worldwide. Notably, the announcement anticipates that a new choice of seat for international arbitrations in California will be feasible in January 2019 given the recent passage of California Senate Bill 766 and its anticipated approval by the Governor.

JAMS is a leading global arbitration provider with panelists specializing in international arbitration across a number of industries, including Engineering / Construction, Sports & Entertainment, Intellectual Property and IT. JAMS handles hundreds of international arbitrations each year, and provides important resources such as the JAMS International Arbitration Rules and the JAMS International Clause Workbook. The JAMS International Arbitration Schedule of Fees and Costs ensures fee transparency when engaging an international arbitrator.  JAMS also has capabilities to host arbitration proceedings administered by other international providers.

JAMS offers premiere international arbitration services to attorneys and their clients, and our goal is to offer facilities that reflect the quality and sophistication of these services. The opening of JAMS International Arbitration Centers in New York and Los Angeles comes at a time when we see an upward trend in international arbitrations being held at JAMS. The demand for accessible, comfortable venues for international arbitration proceedings cannot be overstated, and by establishing these centers in two of the world’s top business and travel centers, we aim to provide attorneys access to the tools and services necessary to conduct these proceedings in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.

-Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO

The centers, scheduled to open by the end of 2018, are the first of several planned JAMS International Arbitration Centers and will be established within existing JAMS Resolution Center locations in strategic markets.  The facilities will feature upgraded amenities to provide efficient, comfortable international arbitration proceedings. In addition to the usual JAMS features, such as JAMS Cafés and Business Centers, the JIACs will have:

  • Large LCD monitors and high-quality video conferencing for remote participants and witness cross-examination
  • Translation booths and translation capabilities
  • Complimentary, high-speed wireless and cabled internet
  • Spacious and secure hearing rooms, with access to several breakout rooms
  • Modular tables for flexible meeting setups
  • Extensive shelving for document storage
  • Dedicated phone lines for case intake across time zones
  • Vetted vendors, including court reporting and translation services
  • Arbitrator lounges, which will be especially useful in tri-partite proceedings

The JAMS Los Angeles International Arbitration Center, located in the downtown Los Angeles business district and central to leading hotels and restaurants, will be among the first in California. If SB 766 becomes law, California would become a new and appealing choice for attorneys to seat their international arbitrations by allowing the participation of out-of-state and non-U.S. lawyers.
