Hon. Hugh L. Fraser (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Toronto

Former Ontario Court judge joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, and special master

New Panelist Announcement

Toronto, Canada – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of the Honourable Justice Hugh L. Fraser (Ret.) to its Toronto panel after an accomplished career as a justice of the Ontario Court of Justice (Ottawa). He was appointed as a judge of the Ontario Court in 1993 and became regional senior justice for the East Region of Ontario in 2013, a position in which he managed and advised more than 70 judges and justices of the peace.

Justice Fraser is a former Olympian and a recognized international expert in sports law. As an arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), he was appointed to CAS’s first ad hoc court and has served as either sole or panel arbitrator in dozens of sports-related disputes. He is a member of several ADR panels in North America and Europe, and has conducted arbitrations throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Australia, Brazil, Malaysia and Switzerland.

Justice Fraser will serve as an arbitrator, mediator and special master in a wide variety of disputes, including administrative, business/commercial, employment, entertainment and sports, international, personal injury/torts, professional liability, estates and real property.

Justice Fraser has conducted thousands of trials and directly mediated countless settlements in cases involving complex matters. His cross-border experience, combined with his reputation for fairness and flexibility, makes him a valuable addition to the JAMS panel.

-Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Justice Fraser worked as a barrister in private practice, as counsel to the Canadian Department of Justice and as corporate counsel for a multinational technology firm. He has also served on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

There is such a satisfaction that comes along with resolving a complicated issue with parties. I’m eager to make this transition to JAMS, as it is a natural extension of my legal journey.

-Honourable Justice Hugh L. Fraser (Ret.), JAMS Arbitrator, Mediator, and Special Master

Justice Fraser received his B.A. in political studies and history from Queen’s University and earned his J.D. from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law.
