Irvine, Ca. – Two JAMS neutrals were appointed as Special Masters for the $2.475 billion U.S. ASR Hip Settlement (MDL 2197). Hon. John K. Trotter (Ret.) and Catherine A. Yanni, Esq. will serve as part of a team of three Special Masters for the settlement agreed to by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. and a Court-appointed Committee of plaintiffs’ lawyers. United States District Judge David A. Katz approved the appointment order. As Special Masters, Justice Trotter and Ms. Yanni will assist in the administration and implementation of the settlement and resolve whatever disputes may arise during the process.
Justice Trotter joined JAMS in 1987 after early retirement from the California Court of Appeal. He is recognized as one of the country’s leading Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioners, and was named the “Most Influential Attorney in ADR” by the National Law Journal in 2011. Justice Trotter has previously served as a Special Master in several multi-district litigation (MDL) settlements involving the pharmaceutical industry, including Zyprexa I, Zyprexa II, Baycol, Rezulin, and Vioxx. He is based in Orange, California.
Catherine A. Yanni, Esq. joined JAMS in 1998 and has successfully mediated, arbitrated or acted as a Special Master in thousands of cases. Cathy has served as a Special Master by court appointment and agreement of the parties in both federal and state courts. As Settlement Special Master in large class actions and Multi District Litigation (MDLs), Cathy has negotiated settlements, and designed, managed, and adjudicated settlement proceedings as well as the allocation processes. She has served as Special Master or Mediator in many high-profile pharmaceutical settlements such as Baycol, Fen Phen, PPA, Silicone Gel Breast Implants, Avandia, Yaz, Quinine, Gadolinium, Zicam I and II, Bextra-Celebrex, and Zyprexa I and II. Ms. Yanni was named a “Top Master” by the Daily Journal in its 2013 “Top California Neutrals” ranking. She is based in San Francisco.
