New York – JAMS, the largest private provider of mediation and arbitration services worldwide, today announced the addition of Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin (Ret.) to its panel. Judge Scheindlin will be based in the JAMS New York Resolution Center. She will serve as a mediator, arbitrator and special master in a variety of disputes including Business/Commercial, Civil Rights, Class Action/Mass Tort and Securities.
Most recently, Judge Scheindlin served for 21.5 years as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. She previously worked as a prosecutor and commercial lawyer, as well as a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York and Special Master in the Agent Orange mass tort litigation. During her tenure as a District Court Judge, Judge Scheindlin presided over a number of high profile cases, many of which involved important issues of constitutional and common law. She is also known for presiding over highly-publicized cases involving civil rights and public policy.
Judge Scheindlin developed a reputation as an expert on e-discovery after a series of opinions in Zubulake v. UBS Warburg. She is also well known for her role in overseeing numerous mass tort cases and multi-district litigation, including cases relating to conflicts of interest at investment banks in initial public offerings and environmental cases over the gasoline additive MTBE.
Judge Scheindlin is a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence, the American Law Institute, a former Chair of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the NYSBA, a former Board Member of the New York County Lawyers Association, the former counselor of the New York Inn of Court and a member of various committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
