JAMS Remembers Hon. Milton Mollen (Ret.)
(1920-2017)
One of JAMS most respected and beloved neutrals, Hon. Milton Mollen (Ret.) passed away on August 14, 2017.
Judge Mollen was known for his many contributions and significant impact in the legal industry. He was a World War II veteran, a former presiding justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department and chair of a historic committee that uncovered corruption within the New York City Police Department, which was established by Mayor David N. Dinkins in 1992. Prior to that in 1990 he served as deputy mayor for public safety under Mayor Dinkins. He had also previously served as general counsel to New York’s Housing and Redevelopment Board in 1960 and was made chairman of it in 1962.
In 1995, at the age of 75, Judge Mollen helped to open the first JAMS office in New York. He served as a mediator and arbitrator for several years and helped recruit former and current judges from around the state to join him.
In World War II, serving in the Army Air Forces, Judge Mollen was a navigator on a bombing run over Nazi-occupied France in July 1944 when his plane was shot down. He bailed out, was captured and escaped from a German prison camp in April 1945.
He later served as a judge, and then as the administrative judge, in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn. In 1976 he was elevated to the state’s Appellate Division, Second Department and was the department’s presiding justice from 1978 to 1990.
Judge Mollen is survived by a son, Scott, daughter, Ellen Mollen; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Everyone at JAMS, as well as his many friends and colleagues in the New York community, will greatly miss him.
